PROBLEM
Environmental harm is something we know and care about, yet remains a faraway problem, one of research papers and documentaries. The personal burden we place on the environment is intangible, making accountability and behavior change challenging.
PREMISE
Rising temperatures and sea levels are no longer abstracted threats but materially significant. Retaliatory sociopolitical thought and practice has intensified. Environmentalist ideologues are no longer a minority. They grapple with the trying future passed to them by the two previous, obstinate generations. Attitudes range from despondent to tenacious, manifesting in some novel organizations and demonstrations of commitment, guilt, anger, and hope.
OVERVIEW
DESTINY BOND is a wearable device and experience that makes individual environmental impact tangible. Life cycle analysis of purchase data is performed to calculate an index of consumption relative to the community. This index modulates both the experience and the wearable; as the index increases its color changes and tightness increases.
Device color serves to both inform the user and operate as a social enforcement mechanism. Constriction scaled with quantified impact is a physical embodiment/reminder of environmental burden.
